Gallery Talk: “Wallace Nutting—Accidental Furniture Expert”

Sandra Rux, curator of “Wallace Nutting and the Wentworth-Gardner House,” will give a gallery talk at the Wentworth-Gardner House on Saturday August 22 at 11 a.m. entitled “Wallace Nutting—Accidental Furniture Expert.”  Nutting began his work on documenting early America with photographs of trees and landscapes.  Exteriors of old houses were a natural progression.  Once he began to photograph colonial interiors he needed to know more about colonial furniture.  He started with a good eye, consulted with the experts of the period, bought a lot of furniture for his chain of colonial picture houses and thus learned quickly.  Perhaps he would be quite surprised to find that his Furniture Treasury and Pilgrim Century Furniture are still consulted by antiquarians and dealers.

Learn more about how and why he was able to do this.
