Special Exhibit: “Lost Portsmouth”

The Wentworth Lear Historic House Association has mounted an exhibit titled “Lost Portsmouth” in the historic (1764) Wentworth Gardner house at 50 Mechanic Street in Portsmouth.
The exhibit, which runs through October 9, features sixty before-and-after photographs of distinguished houses and other structures, mainly dating fromthe 1700s, that were for the most part demolished and their sites given over

to less interesting uses such as parking lots and gas stations. Public response to the exhibit has been very positive, with many visitors remarking that they had no idea so many fine old buildings had once graced Portsmouth.
